The Face ID is a facial recognition system designed by Apple Inc. and unveiled on September 12, 2017, together with their flagship iPhone X. Like its predecessor the Touch ID, Face ID is a form of biometric verification. As of now, the feature is only available on the iPhone X.

How Face ID works

The Face ID uses the iPhone X’s front-facing camera which Apple calls a TrueDepth camera. According to the company, this camera is more than a simple selfie camera. It is equipped with a flood illuminator, infrared camera,  dot projector, and ambient light and proximity sensors.

All this technology functions in unison to automatically recognize your face when you try to open your iPhone.

How to set up Face ID

Touch ID lets you unlock your iPhone with just a fingerprint, and Face ID works in a similar way. Just by holding your iPhone X to your face, and you can unlock the device. Face ID is also real easy to set up—you just need to follow these instructions.

  1. Go to Settings.

  2. Select Face ID & Passcode. Enter your passcode

  3. Select Set Up Face ID.

  4. Position your face in front of your iPhone X then select Get Started.

  5. Look straight at your iPhone and make sure that you place your face inside the frame displayed on the screen.

  6. Complete the circle outside the frame by gently moving your head in a circular motion.

  7. Select Continue.

  8. Repeat Step No. 6.

  9. Select Done.

How to unlock your iPhone X

After setting up your Face ID, you can start using it to unlock your iPhone X. Here’s how.

  1. Use either Raise to Wake or Tap to Wake on your iPhone X.

  2. Hold your face directly in front of your iPhone X.

  3. Once the lock icon changes from closed to open, swipe upwards from the bottom of the screen to unlock your iPhone X.

Face ID is primarily for authentication, but that’s not the only thing it’s good for. It also has other cool uses like:

Make purchases

You can use Face ID in conjunction with Apple Pay to make purchases on your iPhone X. Just make sure Apple Pay is turned on in your iPhone X. Here’s how to make a purchase:

  • Within a store:

  1. Use your default card by double-clicking the side button. Use a different card by double-clicking the side button, tapping your default card, then choosing another card.

  2. Glance at your device for Face ID authentication.

  3. Hold the top of your iPhone X near the contactless reader.

  4. Wait for the “Done” checkmark to be displayed on your screen.

  • Within an app, website, or Safari:

  1. Once you’ve selected your items, you can confirm payment either by tapping the Buy with Apple Pay button or choosing Apple Pay as the payment method. If you want to use a different card, tap the arrow next to your card.

  2. Double click the side button.

  3. Glance at your iPhone X.

  4. Wait for the “Done” checkmark to be displayed on your screen.

  • Within iTunes, App Store, or iBooks Store

  1. Open iTunes, App Store, or iBooks Store, then pick what you want to purchase.

  2. When the payment prompt appears, double-click the side button

  3. Glance at your iPhone X.

  4. Wait for the “Done” checkmark to be displayed on your screen.

Sign in to apps

You can use Face ID to sign in to apps provided that they support the function.

  1. Open the app and sign in.

  2. Allow the app to use your username and password.

  3. Glance at your iPhone X to complete the sign in process.

If you want to take a look at which apps can use Face ID to sign in, go to Settings, Face ID & Passcode, then tap Other Apps.

Important things to know:

  1. With its infrared feature, Face ID still works well in authenticating your face even in low light environments.

  2. Face ID requires eye contact to function which means it won’t work if you are unconscious or asleep.

  3. Face ID’s uses machine learning so it will work even if you have glasses, contact lenses, sunglasses, hats, a beard, etc.

  4. Face ID has the capability to detect physical changes in appearance such as a new hairstyle or the natural effects of aging.

  5. Face ID will require you to enter your passcode for added security after five unsuccessful attempts at face verification.
