The battery is a crucial component of your MacBook. Without proper care, its life may be reduced significantly. Maximize your MacBook’s battery life by learning more about how the battery actually works.
What is a battery cycle?
Simply put, a battery cycle is the amount time it takes your Macbook’s battery life to go from 100% to 0%. Depending on your usage, this could take several days. Keep in mind that one full charge does not equal one cycle. You could charge your MacBook’s battery exactly 100 times, but the number of battery cycles will be significantly less than that.
Checking your MacBook’s battery cycles and overall health.
To check the number of your MacBook’s battery cycles, here’s what you need to do:
- Hold the option key. Click on the Apple icon and select System Information.
- Click on Power, which is under Hardware on the left side of the page.
- Your current number of battery cycles is displayed beside Cycle Count under Health Information.
The cycle count lets you know the overall health and lifespan of your battery. For example: Your MacBook has a cycle count limit of 500, and your current cycle count is 250. That means your battery is halfway consumed. The question is: How do you know the maximum cycle count limit of your MacBook?
Determining your MacBook’s maximum cycle count limit.
Once a MacBook’s battery has reached its maximum cycle count, the battery is considered fully consumed and must be replaced. Newer models typically have a limit of 1000 cycles while older ones have far less. For the full list of MacBook models and their corresponding cycle count limits, you can check this page on Apple Support.
MacBook battery maintenance
First, it’s important to remember that no matter what you do, the time will come when your battery is fully consumed. There’s simply no getting around it. It’s just a matter of prolonging that time and preserving your MacBook’s battery life, which you can achieve with the following tips.
- Avoid draining your battery.
Don’t drain your battery significantly before you recharge. Charge your MacBook as soon as the battery hits 50%, and don’t use it until charging is complete. For a longer battery life, make the discharge period as short as possible.
- Don’t keep it plugged in.
Once the battery is fully charged, remove the plug immediately. Don’t use your MacBook all day with the charger still connected because the electricity deteriorates your battery’s lifespan.
- Calibrate your battery.
This means letting your battery get to 0% and then charging it back up to 100%. Apple recommends doing this once or twice a month. Calibration is also ideal for newly purchased MacBooks.
- Proper temperature is key.
Heat can damage a MacBook (or any other device), so avoid using and storing it in hot environments. According to Apple, the MacBook works best in temperatures ranging from 50° to 95°F (10° to 35°C). Meanwhile, storage temperatures should be from -13° to 113°F (-25° to 45°C), but the rule of thumb is to just just keep it close to room temperature (71.6°F or 22°C).
