A macbook keyboard

If you own a MacBook, you know that cleaning it can be tedious and complicated. You also know that your MacBook’s keyboard is especially tricky to clean, since all the dust and grime that gather under the narrow spaces between the keys and the MacBook’s chassis can be extremely difficult to remove.

Find it hard to get rid of the dirt on your MacBook’s keyboard? Then fret no more. This blog will teach you how to efficiently clean it. So read on.

Steps to cleaning your MacBook's Keyboard

  • Shut down your device.

The first thing you need to do is shut down your MacBook. This prevents the laptop from getting damaged in the cleaning process. You should also disconnect your Macbook from its power source and remove all devices connected to any ports, such as external hard drives, USB flash drives, or wired headphones.

  • Shake off excess dirt.

Take your MacBook and carry it over an open rubbish bin. Tilt it on its side and gently shake it to remove some of the dirt that has been lodged under the nooks and crannies of your keyboard. Once you no longer see any dirt falling out, slowly run your palm over your keyboard to loosen any particles that may have gotten stuck.

  • Use a can of compressed air.

Compressed air is air that has been kept under pressure that is greater than atmospheric level. It has a wide range of purposes, but one of its most common uses is cleaning various power tools and electronic devices. It is sold in cans with spray nozzles and is available at any hardware or electronics store.

You can use a can of compressed air to effortlessly clean your keyboard and free it from any dust and dirt. Here’s what you need to do.

  1. Hold your MacBook and tip it to its side at about a 70 to 75 degree angle. Grip it firmly so you don’t accidentally drop it.

  2. Take your can of compressed air and spray it on the right half of your keyboard by using a smooth left-to-right motion. To spray the left side, simply rotate your MacBook, but this time, use a right-to-left motion.

  3. Repeat this process as many times as necessary to clean your keyboard completely.

If you’re worried that you might drop your MacBook, you can spray it with compressed air over a soft surface like your bed. This way, your MacBook won’t get damaged if you lose your grip on it. Just put a large piece of cloth to catch all the falling dust and dirt particles and prevent them from getting on your bed.

  • Use cloth and cotton swabs.

Wipe your MacBook’s keyboard with a damp lint- and static-free cloth to eliminate any leftover dust and dirt. The cloth should only be slightly damp, not dripping wet, since the water can seep into your MacBook’s internal components through the spaces under the keys.

Scrub stains that don’t come off with a cotton swab that’s been dampened with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol. Keep on doing this until the stain is gone, but do it in a gentle manner so that you don’t end up breaking the keys.

  • Disinfect your keyboard.

The easiest way to disinfect your keyboard is with specialized disinfecting wipes. When buying disinfecting wipes, read the labels to make sure that they don’t contain bleach, as this can damage the coating of your keys and cause discolouration as well.

Grab as much as four or five wipes from the container, squeeze out the excess liquid, then wipe your keyboard with them.

  • Dry off your keyboard.

Use a dry lint- and static-free cloth (microfiber) and wipe the entire surface of your keyboard with it to remove excess moisture. Alternatively, you can also put your MacBook in front of an electric fan and wait a few minutes for it to dry.

MacBook keyboard issues

If you were experiencing problems with your MacBook’s keyboard (unresponsive keys, keys that are stuck, etc.) before you cleaned it and cleaning  did not solve the problem, then you might need to visit a nearby Apple Store or authorized Apple service provider and have your keyboard repaired.

Keep in mind, though, that depending on the specific terms of your warranty agreement, you may or may not have to pay for repairs.
