Whether it's a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air or the 12-inch MacBook, they are all versatile devices with a host of features. However, first-time MacBook owners may find it awkward and challenging to use. If you want a more convenient and pleasurable experience, it’s best that you get accustomed to the MacBook’s unique setup and interface.
What are some cool things to do with a MacBook?
Here are seven things you need to do first.
- Initial launch
Brand new MacBooks will launch the Setup Assistant, so just follow the instructions on screen while it runs.
- You’ll be asked to choose your country/location. Once you do, press Continue.
- Pick your preferred keyboard based on the language you want for your MacBook.
- Connect to the internet by finding your connection from the list. Enter your Wi-Fi password.
- The Migration Assistant screen will ask you to transfer data either from a Windows PC or a previous MacBook using an external hard drive. Just follow the instructions on the screen. If you want to a fresh start, you can skip over this by clicking on Not Now.
- Set up your Apple ID and iCloud.
Once Location Services is activated, you’ll need to enter your Apple ID and password on the next prompt. If you’re a first-time user and don’t have any account with Apple, you can create your Apple ID here by clicking on Create A Free Apple ID. After, agree to Apple’s Terms and Conditions.
Next, you’ll need to set up your iCloud in order to sync all your Apple devices and the information within them (calendars, emails, contacts, etc).
You can backup your files on iCloud or using Apple's free application Time Machine. Apple's Time Machine app is a great way to back up your files. If you are interested in learning about the Time Machine app, you can read about it here: How to setup, restore and delete MacBook time machine backups.
- Create your personal MacBook account.
Skip this if you migrated information over from your previous MacBook. However, if you’re new to MacBooks, create your account by following these steps:
- Input your name.
- Create your desired account name and password.
- Select the best time zone based on your location.
- Register your new MacBook with Apple.
- Click Continue.
You’ve now completed your MacBook setup.
- Make your MacBook your own.
Now that you’re done with setting up your MacBook, you can change settings and personalize your device to suit your preferences and aesthetics. You can alter the Trackpad settings (Point & Click, Scroll & Zoom, More Gestures) as well as the Dock.
You can also disable the Autocorrect feature by clicking on System Preferences, followed by Keyboard, then the Text tab, and then finally unticking the box that with Correct spelling automatically next to it.
- Familiarize yourself with your MacBook.
Take the time to learn all the keyboard shortcuts. It’s going to take a few minutes, but it’ll save you more time in the long run. You can find the list of keyboard shortcuts by searching for keyboard shortcuts on Mac Help or you can check it out on the Apple Support website.
- Visit the MacBook App Store.
Here, you can choose from thousands of apps available, which include both free and paid apps. You can also update existing apps, which is essential to both the proper functioning and security of your MacBook.
- Don’t forget your email.
The last thing you need to is set up your email. If you have more than one email account, Open Apple’s Mail app. It connects to various email services including common ones like Gmail and Yahoo Mail.
See, that wasn’t so hard, right? You’re now well on your way to mastering your MacBook and using it to its full potential.
